100% Disabled Veteran Real Property Tax Exemption

Full exemption on your home + up to one acre

Virginia exempts from local property tax the principal residence (plus up to one acre) of a veteran with a 100% service-connected, permanent and total disability. A qualifying surviving spouse who does not remarry keeps the exemption and, since 2019, can take it to a new Virginia home.

Disabled Veteran Motor Vehicle Tax Exemption

No local property tax on one vehicle

Since 2021, Virginia exempts one automobile or pickup truck owned and used primarily by or for a 100% service-connected, totally and permanently disabled veteran from local vehicle (personal property) taxation.

Virginia Military Survivors & Dependents Education Program (VMSDEP)

Tuition & fee waiver (plus possible stipend) at public colleges

VMSDEP waives tuition and required fees at Virginia public colleges and universities for spouses and children of veterans rated by the VA as totally and permanently disabled (or at least 90% permanent) from military service, or killed/MIA/POW. Benefits run up to eight semesters; some students also get a stipend for room, board, and books.

Disabled Veteran Lifetime Hunting & Fishing License

Free lifetime hunt + freshwater fish license

Virginia issues a nontransferable lifetime license letting a veteran hunt and freshwater fish anywhere in the Commonwealth, for veterans who certify a total and permanent service-connected disability.
