The Veteran ID Card (VIC) is a free card from the VA that proves you're a veteran — handy for claiming military discounts at stores and restaurants without carrying your DD-214. It's easy to get and a lot of veterans don't know it exists.

What it is and isn't: the VIC is proof of service for discounts and courtesy. It is not a military/federal ID, and it doesn't grant base access, VA health care, or benefits on its own. Those use different cards (a retiree/dependent ID, or the VA Health ID Card / VHIC for VA medical care).

Who qualifies

Almost any veteran with an honorable or general (other-than-dishonorable) discharge — including National Guard and Reserve members with a qualifying period of federal active service.

  2. Upload a photo and confirm your details. Most cards arrive within about 60 days, and a digital version is available too.
