VA dental care: who qualifies, and VADIP

VA dental care isn't automatic with VA health-care enrollment — free dental is “class-based,” tied to specific circumstances. Only about a quarter of enrolled veterans qualify for free care, but there's also a discounted insurance option for everyone else.

Who gets free VA dental care

You generally qualify for free VA dental care if you:

• Have a service-connected (compensable) dental condition or disability;
• Are rated 100% permanent & total service-connected, or receiving TDIU;
• Are a former prisoner of war;
• Are receiving Aid & Attendance or Housebound benefits;
• Have a dental condition tied to another service-connected condition, or that started/worsened in service (with a timely application), among other specific classes.

VADIP — discounted insurance for everyone else

If you don't qualify for free care, the VA Dental Insurance Program (VADIP) offers discounted private dental insurance (through Delta Dental and MetLife) to any veteran enrolled in VA health care and to CHAMPVA beneficiaries — regardless of disability rating. Premiums typically run about $10–$60 a month with meaningful in-network savings; preventive care (cleanings, exams) usually starts right away, while major work often has a waiting period.

How to check & enroll

1. Confirm whether you qualify for free care at VA.gov (dental care).
2. If not, and you're enrolled in VA health care or CHAMPVA, compare VADIP plans and enroll through the program's providers.
