Alabama Veteran Benefits
Veteran and military benefits available in Alabama: property-tax exemptions, tuition waivers, license and park-fee waivers, and more — each verified from an official Alabama source.
Disabled Veteran Property Tax Exemption
Exempt from state property tax; full exemption for SAH-grant homes
Alabama exempts permanently & totally disabled residents (regardless of age) from the state portion of property tax, and fully exempts a home acquired through a VA specially adapted housing (SAH) grant, as long as it's owned and occupied by the veteran or their unremarried surviving spouse.
Alabama G.I. Dependents' Scholarship Program
Free tuition, books & fees for dependents of disabled vets
Alabama's G.I. Dependents' Scholarship Program provides tuition, required books, and instructional fees at qualifying Alabama public universities, community colleges, and technical schools for dependents (children and spouses) of veterans rated at least 20% service-connected disabled (or who died of service-connected causes).
Military Veteran's Appreciation Hunting/Fishing License
Free / reduced appreciation license for disabled veterans
Alabama offers the Annual Military Veteran's Appreciation Hunting License free to resident veterans rated at least 50% disabled (or 100%), and an Annual Military Veteran's Appreciation License to resident veterans with at least a 20% VA disability rating.
State Employment Preference
5 points (10 if disabled) on merit exams
Honorably discharged veterans receive 5 points added to their Alabama state merit-system exam score; permanently disabled veterans receive 10 points (a VA disability letter dated within the last 6 months is required). Preference applies to initial appointments.
Disabled Veteran Vehicle Registration Exemption
No registration fee/license tax on one vehicle
Veterans with a service-connected disability rated 10% or higher are exempt from state registration fees, license taxes, and issuance costs for one vehicle registered with a Disabled Veteran plate. Those rated over 50% (or needing special controls) may get multiple plates.
