Explore military career fields

Every branch fills the same broad career fields. Here's what each one does, the kinds of jobs in it, and the ASVAB subtests that matter most. Your AFQT score decides whether you can enlist; individual subtests combine into “line scores” that decide which jobs you qualify for.

🎯 Combat & ground forces

The front-line fight — closing with the enemy on the ground and the fire support and mobility that back it up.

Example jobs: Infantry, field artillery, armor / tank crew, cavalry scout, combat engineer.

ASVAB areas: Arithmetic Reasoning (AR) and Mechanical Comprehension (MC), often with Auto & Shop (AS). Physical standards are the biggest gate.

✈️ Aviation & aircrew

Keeping aircraft flying and running the airspace — maintenance, avionics, and the crews and controllers who operate around them.

Example jobs: Aircraft mechanic, avionics technician, air traffic controller, enlisted aircrew / loadmaster.

ASVAB areas: Mechanical Comprehension (MC), Electronics Information (EI), and General Science (GS). (Becoming a pilot is an officer path with a separate flight aptitude test.)

🩺 Medical & healthcare

Caring for service members in the field and in hospitals — from first responders under fire to lab, dental, and behavioral health.

Example jobs: Combat medic / corpsman, medical lab tech, dental assistant, behavioral-health specialist, pharmacy tech.

ASVAB areas: General Science (GS) and Arithmetic Reasoning (AR) weigh most, plus the verbal subtests — Word Knowledge (WK) and Paragraph Comprehension (PC).

💻 Cyber & IT

Running and defending military networks and communications — the digital backbone of modern operations.

Example jobs: Cyber operations specialist, network / systems administrator, IT support, signals / communications.

ASVAB areas: Arithmetic Reasoning (AR), Math Knowledge (MK), Electronics Information (EI), and General Science (GS). These tend to require higher scores.

🛰️ Intelligence & language

Collecting and making sense of information — imagery, signals, and human intelligence — plus the linguists who translate it.

Example jobs: Intelligence analyst, signals / geospatial intelligence, human intelligence collector, cryptologic linguist.

ASVAB areas: Arithmetic Reasoning (AR), Math Knowledge (MK), and the verbal subtests (WK, PC). Linguists also take the separate DLAB language-aptitude test.

🔧 Mechanical & maintenance

Diagnosing and fixing what the force runs on — vehicles, powertrains, generators, and heavy equipment.

Example jobs: Wheeled / tracked vehicle mechanic, powertrain repairer, generator / power tech, allied-trades machinist.

ASVAB areas: Mechanical Comprehension (MC) and Auto & Shop (AS) matter most, with Electronics Information (EI).

🏗️ Engineering & construction

Building, powering, and sustaining bases and infrastructure — from combat engineering to the construction and utility trades.

Example jobs: Combat engineer, carpentry / masonry, electrician, plumber / utilities, heavy-equipment operator.

ASVAB areas: Mechanical Comprehension (MC), Auto & Shop (AS), and Math Knowledge (MK), with General Science (GS).

📦 Logistics & supply

Getting the right people, parts, fuel, and ammo to the right place — the movement and supply that keep everything running.

Example jobs: Supply specialist, transportation / motor-transport operator, ammunition specialist, petroleum supply.

ASVAB areas: The verbal subtests (WK, PC) and Math Knowledge (MK) / Arithmetic Reasoning (AR) — the “clerical/administrative” aptitude.

🛡️ Military police & security

Law enforcement, physical security, and corrections on and around installations — protecting people and property.

Example jobs: Military police, corrections specialist, security forces, working-dog handler.

ASVAB areas: Word Knowledge (WK) and Paragraph Comprehension (PC) with Arithmetic Reasoning (AR); physical and background standards also apply.

🗂️ Administration & finance

The paperwork behind the force — personnel records, pay, and legal support that keep careers and units running.

Example jobs: Human-resources / personnel specialist, financial-management technician, paralegal / legal specialist.

ASVAB areas: The verbal subtests (WK, PC) and Math Knowledge (MK) — the “clerical/administrative” line scores weigh most.

📡 Signal & communications

Setting up and running the radios, networks, and satellite links that keep units connected in the field.

Example jobs: Signal support specialist, radio operator, satellite / microwave systems operator, network switching.

ASVAB areas: Electronics Information (EI) and General Science (GS), with Arithmetic Reasoning (AR) and Math Knowledge (MK).

☢️ Nuclear operations

Operating and maintaining the nuclear reactors that power submarines and aircraft carriers — one of the most technical paths in the military.

Example jobs: Navy nuclear machinist’s mate, electrician’s mate (nuclear), electronics technician (nuclear).

ASVAB areas: Very high Math Knowledge (MK), Arithmetic Reasoning (AR), Electronics Information (EI), and General Science (GS) — the Navy Nuclear Field has one of the highest score bars in the military.

💣 Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD)

Locating, disarming, and disposing of bombs, IEDs, and unexploded ordnance — high-stakes, highly selective work.

Example jobs: EOD technician (offered by every branch).

ASVAB areas: Strong General Science (GS), Math Knowledge (MK), Electronics Information (EI), and Mechanical Comprehension (MC) — plus a demanding physical and mental selection pipeline.

🚀 Space operations

Operating satellites, missile-warning systems, and space-based sensors — the Space Force’s core mission, with roles in other branches too.

Example jobs: Space systems operator, satellite / ground-systems operator, orbital analyst, missile-warning operator.

ASVAB areas: Math Knowledge (MK), Arithmetic Reasoning (AR), General Science (GS), and Electronics Information (EI).

☣️ CBRN defense

Protecting the force from chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear threats — detection, decontamination, and hazard response.

Example jobs: CBRN specialist, hazardous-material handler, decontamination operations.

ASVAB areas: General Science (GS) and Arithmetic Reasoning (AR), with Math Knowledge (MK) and the verbal subtests (WK, PC).

🚒 Firefighting & emergency services

Structural and aircraft firefighting, rescue, and emergency response on installations and flight lines.

Example jobs: Firefighter, aircraft rescue firefighter (ARFF), emergency-management specialist.

ASVAB areas: General Science (GS), Mechanical Comprehension (MC), and Arithmetic Reasoning (AR); physical standards apply.

Telling the military’s story — journalism, photography, video, and broadcasting for internal and public audiences.

Example jobs: Public affairs specialist, mass communication specialist, photographer / videographer, broadcaster.

ASVAB areas: Strong verbal subtests — Word Knowledge (WK) and Paragraph Comprehension (PC) — with Arithmetic Reasoning (AR).

🌦️ Weather & environmental

Forecasting the weather and ocean conditions that shape flight, sea, and ground operations.

Example jobs: Weather forecaster, aerographer’s mate, atmospheric / oceanographic analyst.
