Hawaii Veteran Benefits
Veteran and military benefits available in Hawaii: property-tax exemptions, tuition waivers, license and park-fee waivers, and more — each verified from an official Hawaii source.
Real Property Tax Exemption (Totally Disabled)
Home largely exempt from property tax
Hawaii exempts from real property tax the home owned and occupied by a totally disabled veteran (or their widow(er)), typically leaving only a minimum annual tax. Requires a VA 100% service-connected disability rating.
Motor Vehicle Tax & Registration Exemption
Passenger-car tax exemption + $46 registration fee waived
Hawaii exempts a passenger car owned by a totally disabled veteran from the vehicle tax, and waives the $46 state registration fee, for veterans with a 100% service-connected disability rating.
State Employment Preference
5 points (10 if disabled) on state exams
Non-disabled veterans receive 5 preference points and disabled veterans receive 10 points added to their examination scores for open competitive State of Hawaii jobs. A 10-point derived preference is available to eligible surviving spouses.
Resident Tuition at University of Hawaii
Resident tuition rate in the UH system
Nonresident veterans (and service members stationed in Hawaii on orders), along with their dependents, may attend University of Hawaii system institutions at the resident tuition rate.
