Post-9/11 GI Bill Transfer to Family (TEB)

Active-duty and Selected Reserve members with 6 years of service can transfer unused Post-9/11 GI Bill benefits to a spouse or children — but only while still serving.

Who qualifies: Active duty, National Guard.

**What It Is**
You can give unused **Post-9/11 GI Bill** benefits to your spouse or children through the Transfer of Education Benefits (TEB) — up to **36 months** total, which you can split among family members.

**Who Can Transfer**
• Active-duty or Selected Reserve members who have completed **at least 6 years of service** and
• Commit to **4 more years**, with the family member enrolled in **DEERS**.
• (Purple Heart recipients are exempt from the added service obligation but must transfer while on active duty.)

**When Family Can Use It**
• **Spouse** — can use it right away; no expiration if you separated on/after Jan 1, 2013.
• **Children** — only after you complete **10 years of service**; must have a high-school diploma and generally be 18–26.

**How to Transfer**
Request it through **milConnect** — this is a **Department of Defense** step, and you **cannot** do it after you separate. Your dependent then applies to the VA (children under 18 use VA Form 22-1990e).

**Tip**
Estimate the housing piece with a GI Bill housing calculator, and see the full education-benefits comparison to decide whether to transfer or use it yourself.
