VA Home Modification (HISA Grant)

Up to $6,800 (service-connected) or $2,000 (non-service-connected) grant for home modifications for veterans with physical disabilities.

Who qualifies: Veterans, Veterans with a service-connected disability.

The Home Improvements and Structural Alterations (HISA) grant helps veterans modify their homes:

For service-connected disabilities:
• Up to $6,800 lifetime grant
• Covers modifications needed because of the service-connected disability

For non-service-connected disabilities:
• Up to $2,000 lifetime grant
• Must be enrolled in VA healthcare

Covered modifications:
• Roll-in showers and accessible bathrooms
• Ramp construction
• Widening doorways
• Lowering kitchen counters
• Installing grab bars and handrails
• Stair glides and lifts

Note: HISA is separate from and in addition to the larger SAH ($117,014) and SHA ($23,444) grants for more severe disabilities.

Apply through your VA medical center's prosthetics department.
