MilTax: Free Tax Filing for the Military

Updated July 2026

MilTax is free tax preparation software and expert support built for the military, offered through Military OneSource. Unlike consumer "free" tax products, it has no income limit and is designed around military tax situations like deployments, moves, and combat pay.

What MilTax includes

You get free access to tax-preparation software plus the option to talk to trained MilTax consultants. It covers your federal return and state returns at no cost, and the consultants understand military-specific issues. There is no income limit — it is free regardless of rank or pay.

Who is eligible

MilTax is available to active-duty members, National Guard and Reserve members regardless of activation status, eligible family members, survivors, and recent veterans for up to 365 days after separation or retirement. Eligibility is verified through DEERS.

Military tax situations it handles

  • Combat Zone Tax Exclusion — pay earned in a combat zone that is excluded from taxable income.
  • Filing extensions for those deployed or serving in a combat zone.
  • Multi-state issues from PCS moves, and the rules that let you keep a home state of legal residence.
  • Moving, reserve travel, and other military-specific deductions and credits.

How to access it

Go through Military OneSource to reach the MilTax software and to book a consultation, or call 800-342-9647. See related help like the tax benefits and free VITA tax assistance on base.
