MilTax — Free Tax Filing for Military
Free tax preparation software and consultation for all military, veterans (within 1 year of separation), and their families.
Who qualifies: Active duty, Veterans, National Guard.
MilTax is a free tax service offered by the DoD and Military OneSource:
• Free tax preparation software (no income limit)
• Free live tax consultations with tax professionals by phone or video
• Available to all active duty members and their families
• Available to Guard/Reserve members and families
• Available to veterans for up to 365 days after separation
• Handles military-specific tax situations: combat zone exclusion, PCS moves, multiple state filings, reenlistment bonuses
Additionally, TurboTax offers a free federal/state return for active duty and reservists. H&R Block offers similar military discounts.
VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) sites on military installations offer free, in-person tax preparation by IRS-certified preparers.
