VA-authorized care at civilian providers when VA cannot provide timely or local care.
Who qualifies: Veterans, Veterans with a service-connected disability.
When the VA cannot provide care within certain wait time or drive distance standards, veterans can receive care from community (civilian) providers at VA expense.
• No cost to the veteran beyond normal VA copays
• Covers primary care, specialty care, mental health, and more
• Requires VA authorization except in emergencies
• Managed by third-party administrators (TriWest, Optum)
