Special Monthly Compensation (SMC)
Extra monthly payments above the standard 100% rate for specific severe disabilities such as limb loss, blindness, or need for aid and attendance.
Who qualifies: Veterans, Veterans with a service-connected disability.
SMC provides additional compensation above the 100% rating for veterans with particularly severe conditions:
• Loss or loss of use of a limb
• Blindness in one or both eyes
• Deafness
• Paralysis
• Need for regular aid and attendance
• Housebound status
• Combination of multiple severe disabilities
SMC levels are labeled K, L, M, N, O, P, Q, R, S, and T. Rates can exceed $10,000/month for the highest SMC levels.
