Selective Reenlistment Bonus (SRB / SRP)
Lump-sum bonus up to $100,000 per contract for reenlisting in a critical specialty. Combat-zone reenlistments are completely tax-free.

**What the SRB Is**
The Selective Reenlistment Bonus (SRB) — called the Selective Retention Bonus in the Army and Selective Retention Program (SRP) in some communities — is a cash incentive paid to retain experienced service members in high-demand, undermanned specialties.
**How It's Calculated**
SRB = Monthly Base Pay × Years of Additional Obligated Service (max 6) × Zone Multiplier
• Statutory cap: $100,000 per single reenlistment contract
• Example: An E-5 with ~$3,200/month base pay reenlisting for 4 years at a 3.0 multiplier = $3,200 × 4 × 3.0 = $38,400
**Service Zones**
• Zone A: 17 months–6 years of service (first-term) — usually the highest multipliers, since the services most want to retain first-term talent
• Zone B: 6–10 years (mid-career) — multipliers typically 1.0–3.0×
• Zone C: 10–14 years (senior NCO) — multipliers typically 0.5–2.0×
**Payment Structure**
• First 50% paid as a lump sum on the contract effective date (via DFAS, 1–2 pay cycles)
• Remaining 50% paid in equal anniversary installments over the rest of the obligation
**Tax Advantage**
An SRB signed while physically present in a designated combat zone is exempt from federal income tax — a major reason many service members time reenlistment around a deployment.
**Recoupment Warning**
If you separate before your contract ends (for reasons other than narrow service-approved exceptions), DFAS recoups the unearned portion of the bonus, calculated pro-rata by months served. Do not spend the lump sum assuming the obligation is already satisfied.
**Important 2026 Note**
Eligibility lists change frequently and have been cut sharply in some branches/years (the Air Force FY26 list dropped ~73% of specialties). Always verify your specialty is currently listed before counting on a bonus — talk to your retention counselor.
