PCS Moving Allowances
The military pays to move your household goods (up to weight limits) when you PCS. Includes travel pay, per diem, and Dislocation Allowance (DLA).
Who qualifies: Active duty, National Guard.
When ordered to Permanent Change of Station (PCS), the military covers relocation costs:
Household Goods (HHG) Shipment:
• Government ships up to your weight allowance (based on rank)
• E-1: 5,000 lbs | E-5: 8,000 lbs | O-3: 10,500 lbs | O-6: 18,000 lbs
• Two options: Government Bill of Lading (GBL) or Personally Procured Move (PPM)
Personally Procured Move (PPM / DITY Move):
• Government pays you to move yourself
• You keep 95% of what the government would have paid a moving company
• Can result in significant profit if moving light
PCS Allowances:
• Dislocation Allowance (DLA): lump-sum payment to cover move-in costs
• Temporary Lodging Expense (TLE): up to 10 days lodging at old/new duty station
• Per Diem: daily pay for travel days based on rank and family size
• Mileage reimbursement at government rate
Travel for Dependents:
• Travel and per diem for family members when joining service member
• Separate shipment of unaccompanied baggage (UAB) for immediate needs
