Asbestos Exposure & Mesothelioma
Veterans who got sick from asbestos exposure in service may qualify for VA disability compensation and health care. Navy and shipyard veterans are at highest risk.
Who qualifies: Veterans, Veterans with a service-connected disability.
Asbestos was used throughout 20th-century military equipment and buildings — in ships, insulation, pipes, brakes, and construction materials — and exposure can cause serious illness decades later.
Conditions asbestos can cause:
• Mesothelioma (a cancer almost always caused by asbestos)
• Asbestosis (lung scarring)
• Lung cancer and other respiratory cancers
• Pleural plaques and thickening
Who was most at risk:
• Navy and shipyard work, boiler and engine rooms, pipefitting and insulation
• Construction, carpentry, demolition, and roofing
• Vehicle and aircraft mechanics (brake/clutch friction products)
• Firefighting (some older gear contained asbestos)
Important: unlike PACT Act burn-pit conditions, asbestos illness is NOT presumptive. You must show three things: a current diagnosis, evidence of asbestos exposure during service (your job/ship/duties help), and a medical opinion (nexus) linking them. Because mesothelioma is almost always caused by asbestos, claims are often approved when in-service exposure is documented, and the VA rates active mesothelioma at 100% in most cases. There is no deadline to file, and these illnesses often appear 20–50 years after exposure.
