Why don’t my VA ratings just add up?
The VA combines ratings using a “whole person” formula: each condition is applied to the remaining healthy percentage, so 50% + 30% combines to about 65% (rounded to 70%), not 80%.
What is the bilateral factor?
When you have disabilities affecting both arms or both legs, the VA adds a 10% bilateral factor to those combined ratings before combining with the rest, slightly increasing your total.
