Unemployment Compensation for Ex-Servicemembers (UCX)
Weekly unemployment benefits for recently separated service members who are looking for work — administered by your state.
Who qualifies: Veterans.
**What It Is**
The UCX program provides temporary income to service members who have recently left active duty and are unemployed while searching for a job. It works like regular state unemployment insurance, but for former military members.
**Who Qualifies**
• You completed a full term of active service (or were separated early for a qualifying reason) and were discharged under honorable conditions.
• You are able to work, available for work, and actively seeking work.
• You meet your state’s other eligibility rules.
**How Much & How Long**
The weekly amount and how many weeks you can receive are set by the **state** where you file — they vary widely. Your DD-214 is used to establish your military wages.
**How to Apply**
File a claim with the **state workforce agency / unemployment office** in the state where you live, as soon as you separate. Bring your **DD-214 (Member-4 copy)** and your Social Security number.
**Tip**
Don’t wait — benefits generally aren’t retroactive to before you file. Pair this with the Transition Assistance Program (TAP) and your state’s veteran employment representative.
